10 Years In: Building a Community of Small Business Growth

When I launched Dani's Kitchen Shop in 2015, I had no idea where this journey would take me. With a background in education, program management, business finance, and food safety, I thought I was prepared for the road ahead. And in many ways, I was—these skills formed the foundation that allowed me to build a successful niche bakery.
But the past decade has taught me that running a small business is an ongoing education. The most valuable lessons didn't come from my formal training but emerged through daily challenges, unexpected obstacles, and countless moments of trial and error.
Learning in the Trenches
My professional background served me well in establishing operations, ensuring food safety protocols, and managing financials. But I quickly discovered a critical gap in my knowledge: effective marketing.
The hard truth every small business owner eventually faces is this: We can't just build it and hope that people come. We have to give them a reason to come and tell them—continuously.
Over these ten years, I've had to become my own marketing department, content creator, social media manager, and brand strategist. None of these roles were in my original job description, but they've become essential pieces of my business success.
The Value of Shared Experience
What's been most valuable to me throughout this journey? Learning from other small business owners who are "in the thick of it."
There's something uniquely valuable about hearing directly from someone who:
Is facing similar challenges right now
Has tried and failed at strategies you're considering
Has discovered unexpected solutions that formal education never covered
Understands the specific constraints of limited time, budget, and resources
I've also been fortunate to connect with talented professionals along the way who have shared their expertise and helped me in more ways than they know. These photographers, designers, marketers, and other specialists have enriched my business tremendously. Part of what I hope to build with this community is a network where I can connect these amazing people with others who might benefit from their talents.
I've learned more from coffee conversations with fellow small business owners than from any business book or course. These practical, in-the-trenches insights have shaped how I approach everything from visual branding to content creation.
Why I'm Building This Community
After reflecting on what truly made a difference in my business journey, I've identified five fundamental strategies that have sustained Dani's Kitchen Shop for a decade. But more important than these strategies is the opportunity to share them—and to learn from others who are navigating their own business paths.
That's why I'm committed to:
Sharing weekly business tips that come from actual experience, not theory
Building a community where small business owners can connect and exchange ideas
Creating resources that address the real challenges we face every day
Facilitating connections that might lead to shared resources and collaborative opportunities
What's Different About This Approach
This isn't about presenting myself as an expert with all the answers. It's about creating a space where we can learn together, building on each other's experiences and insights.
Unlike many business communities that focus on rapid growth or scaling strategies, we'll focus on sustainable practices that help us build businesses that:
Reflect our authentic voices and values
Integrate naturally into our lives
Create genuine connections with our customers
Stand the test of time through consistent, meaningful progress
If you're a small business owner who values authentic connection, sustainable growth, and learning through shared experience, I invite you to join this community.
Start by grabbing my free guide, "5 Strategies That Built Dani's Kitchen Shop: A Decade of Small Business Success," which details the foundational practices that transformed my business. Then, stay connected through weekly emails where I'll share specific tactics, lessons learned, and opportunities to engage with fellow business owners.
Together, we can create something more valuable than any one of us could build alone: a community of support, practical wisdom, and shared resources that helps each of our businesses thrive.
